| Welcome ... However you landed here, thanks for stopping by. I’ve been covering animal issues in print, radio, and TV for more than two decades – in fact, my whole career has been one big excuse to get close to as many creatures as possible. Photo by Peter Tanenbaum
Please check out THE SECRET LIFE OF ANIMALS -- my half-hour TV show on pets and wildlife on NECN, New England's all-news channel. It airs Sundays at 11:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m., with repeats Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 11 a.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3:30 pm. For those of you who know me, and who have noticed that my grooming has taken a big leap forward, here's my secret: Hair by the fabulous Fia of Newton (Fia, 15 Cypress St., Newton, MA 617-965-3337). Clothes from a really wonderful store in Belmont -- Thirty Petals Boutique. Here are some behind-the-scenes shots (taken by Kerry Gould). Trying to get Sage to sit down -- no one is taking my commands seriously, not even A.J. Cady, my guest from IFAW. Karen fiddles with perfection. (For proof of Karen's skill, tune in to my live-shot on NECN on Fridays at 5:15 when I do my own makeup.) And, yes, that's the incomparable Angela Bertalotto in the background pitching in with a steamer for the couch cover. Angela created the amazing graphics for the show. Her creativity and talentset a high bar for the rest of us. Thank you, Angela! Waad, Angela, Vicki, Sage, Barry, Dave, and Dana, (otherwise dubbed Deano by me, in the right lower corner). To paraphrase Mel Brooks in "Spaceballs": How come no one ever told me how big my butt is? So, while I get to be "Mammal-in-Chief" in front of the camera, you should know that the show exists because of the incredible imagination and business skill of my hero and dear friend Kerry Gould, the vision, optimism, and unstoppable energy of Charlie Kravetz, and the hard work and amazing talents of producer Julie Cunningham, and director Todd Jordan. Plus: Tom Melville, Barry Gadbois, Amanda Nelson, Doreen Vigue, Iris Adler, and everyone at NECN.
If you're interested in Boswell, the gray goose featured in the June 13 issue of The Boston Globe Sunday Magazine -- there's great news. He's feeling fine.(Chipper enough to start his own rather dishy blog, in fact.) below: with Mark and Boswell at what we used to call Tufts vet school. Click on the links to: View Boswell's own blog, THE DAILY HONK.(But don't email him anything you want kept private, the bird is a little -- you should excuse the expression -- loose-lipped on that blog.)
Books For the past several years, I’ve been focused on THE LADY AND THE PANDA, the incredible story of Ruth Harkness (part Jane Goodall, part Myrna Loy), the dress designer who in 1936 brought the first live giant panda to the West. It has been a life changing experience -- or I should say is a life changing experience, since the book continues to open some amazing doors. Movies
