  1. Elephant Company is a lovely story. I have been living in Myanmar, and I feel that you captured the qualities of that place very well. More than likely you have already heard from others, but you have an error of fact on page 176. You describe hummingbirds in the garden, but there are no hummingbirds in Asia. The birds that frequented the garden were most likely sunbirds. Myanmar has numerous sunbirds which are brightly colored, and they would certainly visit canas. This is a minor thing, but it gives those of us who love birds as well as elephants just a twinge. Harriett McCurdy

    • Thank you, thank you, thank you for writing such a marvelous book about these magnificent, beautiful elephants. Especially, Bandoola! When I read that Bill found her murdered, my heart sank to my toes – and my tears on many pages made me close the book before I could go on reading.
We humans have so much to learn about the true love and caring that they have for one another. I could understand why Elephant Bill loved them so.
I don’t think that I will ever look at an elephant and see them any other way
You have indeed captured the true essence of these sweethearts.
I wish I could have just opened the book and stepped inside to be among them too.
Thank you again for bringing this whole incident to the public. I hope they loved it as much as I did.

  2. Dear Ms. Croke, I just finished reading Elephant Company and was thrilled with the story and loved your writing style. My small apartment is filled with elephant objects as I see them as my spirit animal. Your book moved me to tears many times. It also made me feel great joy and even more love for the animal. Thank you for all your efforts in making this truly wonderful book.

  3. I just finished reading Elephant Company. I was even inspired to read the acknowledgements and notes, and apparently enough to write this. What an incredible read and so very well written. I already have a list of 6 family and friends that it will be passed on to, and who knows where from there. Thank you so very much for the experience. May you live long and prosper.

  4. Dear Vicki,
I just finished reading ELEPHANT COMPANY. What a marvelous read. I first heard about you/your book from a Reader’s Digest article on Williams. Thank you so much for that beautiful book…I couldn’t put it down. Yes, like a previous comment, I cried at learning about Bandoola’s murder. There are so many cruelties in the world, but your book was a shining light on love, goodness, kindness, and loyalty. Thank you again for this book. Blessings to you.

  5. I loved it read every inch of type….look forward to getting The Lady and the Panda and the Modern Ark. Awesome seems too little a compliment! Betty Carson

  6. Hi Vicki, I enjoyed meeting you when you came to Newburyport for our literary festival a few years ago. I just want to report back that this past year, my 15-year-old daughter needed to choose a biography to read for school. She ended up thanking me very gratefully for steering her to Elephant Company, and I was grateful for your book which transported her to an unfamiliar time and place and put her back in touch with her animal-loving self. Likewise, I recommended EC to a 13-year-old boy, a widely read history buff, who crowed to his mother, “This is SUCH a good story!”

  7. Dear Vicki,
When a book makes you laugh, cry and put your hand to your mouth and so “oh no” out laud, you know you’ve read a great book. ELEPHANT COMPANY will stay with me for a long time … it’s certainly floated to the top of my all time favorites. Your style of writing is so rich. Your book is a page turner. I’m sure others started your book, as I did, feeling they knew elephants pretty well, but were soon astonished by their capabilities, love and relationships as well as how intuitive the gentle giants are. Keep writing lady. You are an amazing talent.
